Common Mergansers
Frozen lakes and ponds force many waterbirds to seek the open water of the Shawsheen whose flowing water leaves open pools even in the dead of winter. These Common Mergansers were photographed at dawn near the Marland Dam in Andover. The females are gray, with rusty red heads, while the males are white with black on their heads and backs, and are often mistaken for loons.
